The provinces of Barcelona, Girona, Lleida and Tarragona form the region of Catalonia. This popular area of Spain lies in the northeast of the country. 7.4 million people or 16% of the Spanish population live in the four provinces. Only the region of Andalucia has a bigger population than Catalonia.

Province of Girona

Girona is the most northeastern of the four provinces which shares a border with France. This popular area also has borders with Lleida to the west and Barcelona to the south. The Mediterranean Sea lies to the east of the coastal areas.

The province of Girona has a population of 730,000 and covers and area of 5,905 km2. Around 100,000 people live in the city of Girona which is also the capital of the province.

Tossa de Mar Medieval Castle

This part of Spain is rich in medieval history, the municipality of Tossa de Mar is a good example of this. The medieval castle is the only fortified building which remains in Catalonia.

Tourism is big business across the coastal areas of Girona with many popular towns. Lloret de Mar, Blanes and Tossa de Mar see the most tourism.

The province of Girona is one of the most photographed places in Spain. There are many magnificent beaches and plenty of top attractions. The Cathedral of Girona and Sant Feliu church are examples of the spectacular architecture here. Onyar river flows through the capital which is lined with many more medieval buildings.
